It varies, but generally 300 - 350.  It can be manually adjusted within the post, so no worries if the size needs to be adjusted.

I believe the page width is around 708 pixels and using one half to a third of that is typical.

I've heard Google is starting to index photos, so I transfer over a large image and then make it fit in the spot I want it to fit in my post. Usually around 370 and the other size adjusts automatically.

Maximum image sizes before adjusting:   640 x 480 or  800 x 600.  I use Irfanview to resize the pics.

AR will max you out at 700 on blog posts, and at 590 on questions.  You may want to make them smaller, depending upon the post.
