Canada's first Labour Day was in 1872.  The first Labor Day in the USA was in 1882 in NYC.  Labour Day became a national holiday in Canada in 1894 and Labor Day became a national holiday in the USA in 1894.

Not sure. I know it was late 19 century. But May 1 was the preferred labor day in the US until communists declared it was the labor day. May be we should have both for a change.
