Hi Fred-hope the worst is over for y'all up there. I live in a coastal community and NO hurricane is going to blow me anywhere else.

Fred Griffin I love livng in Florida. It's beautiful and easy living. We don't get that many hurricanes. Seems to me you get something wherever you live - tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, etc. At least with a hurricane you have time to leave, if you want.

Fred,
We are happy in California. We hope the hurricane will go easy on all of you. Florida is one of the most beautiful states around, and is loved by many who are willing to put up with the hurricanes, as we are with earthquakes, fires, etc...A

Can't be any worse than what our neighbors in Loisianna endured . Worse part is insurance companies hold up closings during these stroms.

Nah, all areas have their weather issues - we have hurricanes, the west have earthquakes, the midwest has tornados and the north has hurricanes and blizzards
You can't escape the weather anywhere on earth

Hope you're ok, Fred. (Just sent you a note via email.) To answer your question: no, no, no to moving to any coastal area. One reason we chose Charlotte was to avoid hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, mudslides, forest fires, etc. Clearly no place is 100% safe but the odds are better here.
And over the years, I've worked with quite a few seniors who moved up here from Florida because they couldn't afford rising insurance rates on a fixed income. Those are the ones we call half-backs. (They moved to Florida from the northeast or midwest and have now moved half-way back.)

Insurance rates may rise if there are significant losses that the insurance industry needs to recover. Property values may be affected in some situations.

Hi Fred,
I hope you and everyone else came through safely with no damage.
I agree with Ken Jones remarks.
After living on a barrier island (Cocoa Beach) for almost 30 years and the storms of '04 and '05, I don't see any reason to leave the beach and doubt the storms will stop people from moving here. I would much rather deal with a hurricane occasionally than the wild fires in Cali, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.
I doubt the storms will impact values, at least in my area. My guess is that insurance rates will vary from carrier to carrier and in proportion to the damage. Hopefully the rest of the season will be quiet.

Be safe Fred Griffin and write an 'after storm' post this weekend.
Personally, we love to vacation along the coast, any coast east, west, gulf, lake, but prefer our retirement home in the woods one mile from Lake Erie.
Stay safe.

Living near the water is a risky proposition, whether it's a beautiful waterfront or a coastal property. But it's a risk that a lot of people seem willing to take.

Naples had some showers and a little wind, but all is clear now. I love the tropics and would rather have the warning that accompanies a hurricane, than an earthquake without any notice.

If I did consider moving there, it would be with the knowledge that hurricanes happen... just like with earthquakes in Cali. I don't think it'll have too dire of an impact.
