The GFCI is the red/black button on electrical outlet in wet areas such as kitchen, bathroom, laundry rooms. This is the shutoff that stops electric current immediately when the circuit is broken.

This one I know (HA!) because they don't always work properly, according to Home Inspectors Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers. A GFCI is a device that shuts off the electrical circuit when it detects the circuit is going on a wrong path.

This is the most confusing thing to a home inspector! If it's tripped they don't know how to even look for it and will instead say "all the electrical in the kitchen/bathroom/backyard is dead. Hire a licensed electrician to investigate further."
You think I joke, I had two inspectors (each with over 20 years experience) do that on different homes.

This safety electircal circuit is so important. On my new home walk throughs I explain them in great detail and how they are wired so the home owner can be prepared when one trips.
