I didn't attend college until after I was in the workforce, so I graduated high school and went right to work. I don't feel I was missing anything. I did very well in corporate america with the skills I had at graduation.

However, I think NOW that schools should teach things like managing credit scores, spending, budgeting, interviewing, public speaking, making change and the like. Many people seem to lack these regular life skills.

Nikesh,

I loved Greek mythology, and it broadened my perspective and understanding of psychology.  It also kept me from being a unidem (one dimensional person) who can only talk on a few subjects like themselves and what they do.  I think one the greatest travesty in education is not emphasizing the liberal arts.  Business skills are easy to learn...Liberal arts broaden you and your understanding of manking at large.  We sure could use more of that these days.  A

Well I loved mythology and Biology.

But, I think there should have been a course on basic investments - so that people understand value of home ownership, how mortgages work, how investing and creating 401K plans, etc help.

BTW, I think my education prepared me VERY well for all of my jobs, including owning a business.

None, actually. I took advantage of relevant electives in both high school and college and acquired additional skills through extra curricular activities such as Forensic League. That said, education is a life long process and I am a firm believer in continuing ed in general as well as for real estate.

Perhaps some field trips to Civil Court (business lawsuits), and to some Corporate offices, to see how "the real world" works.   It is one thing in theory, it is something else in real life.

Also, how to sell your product and service, and how to sell yourself.

   And, "Dale Carnegie" people skills.

Well, my major was Biology.... and I loved every minute of it.... however, I would have enjoyed a class in creative writing.... I may take one now at a local college.

of course, had I known that new construction was going to be my main focus in real estate, a building construction program would have made a great minor....agents today would be wise to enroll in a "methods and materials" course....

Education is always what you take from it and what you make of it. A friend of mine attended a quality undergraduate program though not in the top ranked schools. He maximized the opportunity he had there. I graduated from a top undergraduate program- and because of the effort he put in- I would say we both got the most of our college years. Lesson learned, it's less about the school and more about the individual.

Not an issue for me... I have a degree in Public and International Affairs with a second major in Russian language and a minor in Mandarin; an MA in Russian studies; and an MBA in Finance and Management. What skills I needed in the "real world" including almost 20 years in corporate finance and now 25 years in real estate were pretty much covered through my educational background and practical experience.

There is a big difference between education and training.  Education helps you to learn critical thinking skills and helps to broaden your knowledge base. Training is something else.  We get lots of opportunity for training throughout our lives, but a lot of us end our education with a diploma.  That's too bad.

My thoughts have nothing in particular to do with real estate, but in life itself, most were learned the hard way.  School did little to prepare for everyday living, like interviewing for a job or how to open and balance a checkbook, parenting skills, goal setting.

I didn't start college until I was 39 and figuring out what I wanted to do when I grew up!  I'd have to say creating a business plan to be more effective at acomplishing my goals.  I went from school straight into real estate school and had always co-owned businesses with my former husband.  He had written business plans while I did the behind the scenes work, so did not know what it would take to accomplish goals.  Had to learn that the hard way!

Hmmmmm, you mean "Looking forward" . . . because what is done is done. The gap between our education system and post-work upon graduation is: Ethics.  Thankfully, it's not the skill I need to acquire.  If "school" taught ETHICS . . . of all things:  Human dignity, human value, human worth, ethics in business, ethics in medicine, ethics in law . . . and not the Harvard Business School model of churning out criminals since 1908, we might actually have a chance.  Everything, and I mean everything in "business" is created to make money . . . and there is no emphasis in the "business models" for ethical behavior.  It's an "algorithm," a mathematical formula, a batch data set . . . and the "human factor" is removed, as is the ETHICAL display of human interaction in the form of business commerce.     Pity.

I definitely should had paid more attention to my accounting class and statistics, since I have had to re learn most of all, when I opened my own business, and I couldn't afford to hire a full time accountant, I had to learn in a hurry a bunch of the basics.

Maybe if the schools were more in touch with the industries and jobs of the present, they could do a better job of incorporating more hands on experience.
