I am sure it depends on the reach of your company, and the access to mls in areas that are outside of your home mls area.

Depends on where you are what the lockbox systems and MLS systems are.  In our expansive Northern VA area, we often find agents belong to two associations to be able to sell a little further south because of the difference in lockbox systems.

Because there is so much overlap between DC, Maryland, and Virginia, I have membership in a single area-wide Board for DC and Maryland, and a semi-membership in the Northern Virginia.

I belong to more than one, but you don't have pay NAR and FAR (Florida Association) for each additional Board or Association.  They are called your "secondary Board".

You can also join additional Boards as "MLS only" and keep the fees down.

I think so, unless another association brings more cache or great networking. I don't think it's needed in Hawaii but I don't know if there are special niches served by associations in California.

In SF  Bay Area we have 6 associations. If you have listings outside the zone Supra will not work. People who used Combination got disciplined. Later we had agents with out of the area membership. Ask them to list on their MLS by mailing in signs and fliers for a fee.

Now with data sharing it is.  My board though is breaking from some of their datasharing because of costly database upgrades, so I may need to join another board to get access to those cities.  Typically one is plenty, but sometimes you need more than one.

Sure. One is enough, but if it's only one it will probably be the NAR. If you joined a state association most likely they will have a requirement to also be a member of the NAR. In our area most offices belong to the County, State & National Associations. But you can work for a "dark side" office/brokerage that doesn't belong to any of the associations (in our state at least). Keep in mind those types of offices have licensed agent/brokers working there but they are not Realtors, they are simply lic to practice real estate.
