A Fascia is a wooden board or other flat piece of material such as that covering the ends of rafters.

Distracting 4th of July answer:
Fascia is not to be confused with the Roman / Latin word fasces, which is a bundle of rods and an axe used as a symbol of absolute totalitarian power. The rods represent punishment by beating; the axe represents beheading.
An example of fasces in America are the several fasces at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., including the two fasces that Lincoln is resting his hands upon.
Another example is the statue of George Washington inside the Washington Monument; he is leaning on a fasces.
The message is clear... obey the Federal Government, or else!

Any front-view exterior board on a building, though I usually think of a roof fascia when I hear the word.

I've put up a few facia boards in my day. There was a home I showed the other day, where the homes was sided except the facia, which was pealing really bad, so going FHA, it would have to be scraped and painted above that 3rd floor at the roof line.

The fascia is the outside trim that the gutters attach to. It is near the bottom edge of the roof and runs at a 90 degree angle to the soffit.
