No, I don't. I've never had a coach who hasn't said anything to me that I didn't already know... as for a mentor, after almost 25 years in the business, I'm more likely to be one than to have one.

I see Active Rain as being sort of like a "coach" to me. Your successes, and not quite successes help me to be accountable, and also help me to grow my business.

I heard Magic Johnson say from stage yesterday in Long Beach, CA "The great ones want want a coach". He also said, "Great leaders are able to be lead" referring to having mentors.

Yes, My first two were my grandmother (50 years a Realtor) and still my Dad. I also have 5 solid real estate mentors in the business-(2 out of state which is cool for other perspectives from other markets), a professional coach at Buffini & Company and a trusted couple of successful entrepreneur friends that have never been in real estate but are crazy good sales/business-men.

Peter Mohylsky they come out in droves, like discount Realtors in the good times. The #1 question I'd ask is "what have you done?"

I have sat at over 2,000 kitchen tables, hotel lobbies, coffee shops, etc. to sell myself as their house painter, wedding DJ or Realtor over the three careers I've had outside of property management. "What have you done Mr. Trainer?"

that service is in great demand in our business....most agents are very secretive....don't share....are paranoid about another agent performing better..... a laundry list of reasons....

I mentor....always have.... when I was actively working, I would mentor and role play with others on how to approach a builder and what they expect and deserve from an agent....

no one every grabbed any of my subdivisions!!!  and if they had, I would have clearly understood that I was not up to par...and my ass would have been searching for that gap....and correcting it....

Unless, you consider ActiveRain a coach (and there is a certain case to be made to show that to be true), I don't currently have a coach.

There never seems to be a shortage of offers.

I do not but I'd think it all depends on what was brought to the table to begin with.  With what skill-set, what mindset are you entering into the profession?  What work habits do you have, good & bad?  Are you self-motivating?   We're each so different and yet this business can work for us all provided we work!

Yes, I have a coach. No I do not have a mentor. No, I have never offered to be a coach or mentor.

All of us who plunked down a dollar for this service ultimately realized these experts are sharing nothing new.

Bob Stewart made a comment a couple of days ago that goes somewhat like this. "There is a light-year difference between knowing what to do and actually DOING it."

The role of the coach is the find the key to release the student's 'not doing' shackles before the student loses interest.  We are all locks searching for a key.

I have found the most effective coaches, those able to alter the trajectory of my life, come through other disciplines.  The influence of those disciplines altered how I do business.

More people offering? You bet. Some of them actually have something to offer. And if you can harvest one nugget of gold, you will be richer.

I'm lucky enough to work for a great broker. He is always available to listen and give advice and I have learned there are no dumb questions, better to ask and proceed with confidence than to not ask and possibly blow a deal.

Yes, the old saying - "those that can do those that can't teach" still rings true - I learned this lesson with a coach early in my career - no more coaches for me - now mentoring is completely different since it involves no financies trading hands.

When I first started, the broker in my office was a great mentor and helped me alot - even if only to motivate me.  I have been to a few seminars from various coaches who are making millions of dollars telling RE agents how great the real estate business is and how to improve their business and make millions of dollars.  I ask them all the same question - "If the business is so great, then why aren't you selling real estate?"  I know the answer already - they make more money selling coaching services.

The old adage comes to mind: Those that can't do...Teach!

When I started in Real Estate, I saw the classic coaches at various seminars or conventions.  Tom Hopkins, Mike Ferry, Floyd Wickman, several others.  Their presentations were exciting and tempting, but I never signed up.

Now, it seems I get an email every day from some coach or another.  Last week a trainer from Tampa was at our Board (he had rented the space; the Board did not endorse him); not only emails but phone calls inviting me to a "free 3 hour seminar that will teach me how to put tens of thousands of dollars in extra commission money in my pocket".   Thanks, no thanks.
