Tough one, there are so many ways to look at this.  She is from Nigeria, a woman, with a name that means flower in her native language.  Do you hear the PC band ramping up on this one?  She also knows that Ellen and Warner Bros have $$$$ could be helpful to her?  

Personally, I would have changed my name way before putting real estate signs up.  My maiden name caused me to receive a letter from a college offering me a potential football scholarship...And if I did not do that, then I would laugh it off, and come up with one hell of a marketing campaign...

    Ellen makes fun of someone's name for financial gain.  How sophomoric and classless can you get?  Oh, you are talking about Ellen, that explains it.

I'd have totally capitalized on that, I would have engage Ellen in order to get on that show again and have her further it with me live on the air. OMG what an opportunity!!!

I would take advantage of the publicity and expand upon it thru the two companies and their likely desire to avoid litigation!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin We live in a litigious society. I'm sure she has been called by a dozen lawyers already. Maybe it isn't offensive until they make fun of your name. I probably wouldn't be bothered by it.

I'm not a fan of Ellen Degeneres at all - I don't find her funny or interested in anything she has to say.

Not having been in a situation like this, I really wouldn't know how I'd respond until it happened to me.

I do have an unusual name but I can't say what I would do if it was made fun of on tv.

Good luck with that. She does alot of real estate related stuff including MLS pics, etc.

How is she/he damaged?

I grew up being called "Higgins" and asked "Where's Magnum?"  (Magnum PI reference) to the ever popular "Huggies" (as in the diaper).  You get a thick skin.  Now if something of mine was used on that show in that manner I might just call them up and have some fun with it.  If what they said actually caused a problem for me, I'd let them know and ask for an appology or something along those lines.  Now if they were dumb enough to slander or defame me, then the lawyers would definitely come out.

I think there are plenty of hilarious signs out there that can be highlighted without resorting to making fun of someone's name.

Would I sue? Not me, I'd just laugh it off and say "please, give them my phone number, too," but I do find the humor sophomoric and classless.

Some will see the opportunity for a law suit ... some will leverage the free press and start marketing ... as see on Ellen show with a spin on real estate is serious business.

Just imagine the possible pairings "xxxx" and Titi Realty.  Arthur Ransome wrote a book (many actually) - this one called Swallas and Amazons.  One of the primary characters was named "Titty".  The name has been changed in the upcoming move version.  What say Michael Jacobs ??

It is free publicity; something it seems most real estate agents are begging for in business. I guess it really depends.

We have a lot of people immigrating from all over the world. Some of the names I have dealt with recently may not be legal to say on TV.  It's a name, we're not in junior high any more. The world is coming here. Enjoy the publicity. Of course the suit could just be another means to get your name out.

I would laugh it off but you know some people are sitting on the sidelines just looking for a reason to sue and get a windfall.

As long as there is money to be made people will try to sue someone.

What is wrong with these signs?

One sign had a real persons name, franchise and broker displayed.

There could be no mistake that a real life was involved, and the reckless manner of Degnerate caused PREDICTABLE and FORESEEABLE harm. There may even have been a TM or (c) on that sign. And I do not know what 'fun' was made of the incident.

You bet, if I, or those important to me, suffered demonstrable, measurable, quantifiable harm, I would be calling an attorney.

Imagine an agent whose last name may be White or Black or Flame inserted into a hostile context.

Have you forgotten what happened to the Texas plumber who sold his work truck only to see it, with his company's advertising  on TV as a weapon being used by ISIS in Syria.

I would call an attorney if measurable harm was the result.

It IS the AMERICAN WAY!
