If you've got a good camera on your phone, there's an app for that.  I've also got a portable scanner the size of a 12" ruler.  Battery operated and saves to media card.  Have to roll it over the paper carefully but works well.

Apps do not do as great of a job as Fujitsu ScanSnaps do.

I use it for paperwork, filing to Dropbox, and sending faxes when appropriate with EFax.

They produce ones that are IBM desktop compatible and MAC compatible the latter having an M in the product name. I have the S510 model which helps me stay organized and able to send faxes. I highly suggest.

I find I only use the scanner on my 4 in 1 printer when at home or the one in my office that the broker provides. When out with a client I use the Genuis Scan app on my phone and send them copies of the documents right on the spot. They love it.

I've seen some scanners that are mobile and feed the page through.  Personally, I use a multi-function printer at my office with a document feeder.

CamScanner Pro is what I use, phone / iPad app with online access to stored documents from your Mac/PC. I've only had success with it (no quirkiness that I've noted) and can even use it to fax (extra per page fee) for those times when I have to fax something I've just snapped. I"ll still use my Epson all-in-one for scanning pictures and such, but so far the phone app works great for text documents.

The phone app is lame except in extreme circumstances.

I never wanted one & everyone that has one it seems they are very tempermental.

Many genealogists use portable scanners. Check with your local genealogy society and see what they suggest. Evernote has a scanner app. Fujitsu ScanSnap S1100, Flip-Pal, Scannerpro by Readdle, DocScanner app, Neat, to name a few worth checking out.
