Interesting question Dorie Dillard!  I've noticed that more women multi-task, while more men (that I have worked with in other career fields also) focus just on the one task in front of them.  That being said, I think both are good listeners - what I have noticed though, is that those who are always 'talking' are not necessarily 'listening' for that exact reason!

My husband asks "Did you just use your 'wife ears' or did you actually HEAR ME?"  And I give my husband 'pop quizzes' when he PRETENDS not to hear me but I know he really DID. ;)

IMO it depends on the subject and the relationship - just ask my husband if he listens to me!

How can you listen when you're talking.  We have talkers in men and women, so it depends on the person.

At my house it is the female sector that is the better listener and that is me.

Women listen better for sure, unless they are shopping and see a bright and shiney purse or shoes.

Listening is a learned trait. We should listen twice as much as we speak.  Two ears and only on mouth.  Don't speak unless your words add something to the silence.

It depends, Ron is a wonderful listener, and many of our male friends are also, as well as our female friends.  

Women lead the way but men are not to be left out. Subjective to be sure

It depends on the individual.

Hate to think it is gender specific.  However, if that is so, then we need to be better at teaching children this lesson early on in life!

It depends on the individual. But I am leaning toward women, as men tend to tune out during conversations longer than 5 minutes.

Men are, we just are pros at not retaining the minute details that women never seem to forget.

Some men, and some women are better listeners. 

Some children are better listeners than some adults. 

The quality of the listening is directly related to the content of the sound.

Men and women fade out equally fast when the content is 'all about the speaker.'

However, I find men are more able to get the conversation back onto known ground with a simple, "How about those Bucks!"

Probably women, but I think they hear what they want to hear. They tend to embellish when they repeat the information. Men tend to be more straight forward listeners. Tell them something, and they take it as gospel.

Listening and/or Hearing ... from my perspective for an "overall" answer ... I will say WOMEN! 

Typically women but I think it really depends on the personality type too.
