Interns by definition can NOT be paid if they do get paid they need to be considered employees. So, no and no.

Hi Dennis - We've had several over the years and we always paid them, usually about 75% of market for what an assistant would make. It's hard to expect someone to work for free.

My 4th assistant started out as a summer intern. No, I didn't pay him in $, he was getting school credit and I was paying him in my time & experience. After 90 days though I asked him to stay and I paid him $15.00/hour part time hours around his school schedule.

Yes. I have used MANY interns.
Be aware of what the intern really wants/needs.
I spend much time during the year to define the PROJECT I want the intern to be engaged in. From concept to specification to development to validation to implementation. When done the intern HAS a portfolio that will prove the disciplines and dimensions of experience they gained in those short six weeks.
Such documentation/goals/measures/outcomes is worth more than GOLD.
Even a failure is golden.
I do not use interns for clerical help.
I do pay for their expenses which is usually twenty dollars an hour.
HINT: talk to any high school guidance counselor or STEM program participant.
