I've had a few qualify who were not members.  I would imagine each one is different though.

I have a loan in process now where the credit union did not require my client to be a member; but some of them do have that requirement.

Jeff Pearl - I think that may be true. Now, one can become the member of the credit union just be depositing $10 - and can be accomplished at the time of applying for mortgage.

I would assume so, or at least that they'd make you a member before lending to you.  Never asked though.

I used to belong to a teachers credit union even though obviously I'm not a teacher. Only had to live within the school district boundaries. I bet if you called, they would have exceptions.

I believe so ... membership has its privileges.  It never hurts to ask the specific credit union – go to the source.

I'm not a credit union expert but my clients who have used a credit union for a mortgage have been members of that union.  "X" Credit Union may have different rules and may need to have the approval of "Y" maybe even "U" or "I".

I am sure the it depends on the rules of the credit union, the first account that I opened with my bank was after they offered me a business line of credit to to buy a bunch of properties.
