"no other professional give gifts.."

If that is the standard to live by, then gifts should not be given.

However, I find such gifts help in the celebration, the culmination of months of work, of moving two families into a usually brighter future, a new chapter in their lives. It is that dimension of "new chapters" the other professions lack. This is a part of what I give myself when there has been a successful closing. Sharing in such moments is why agents can be repeatedly invited back to the dining room table.

It does often seem a bit desperate to try to bribe your clients for a referral.

The best ones just provide a great service and the referrals roll on in.

Gifts come from the heart. Period. I do not give gifts to all clients. I give when my heart compels me to do so and expect nothing in return.

I give a closing gift to EVERY client at closing.   It's a thank you but it's also a house warming gift for one of my newest friends to help them celebrate their new home.

No, but wouldn't it be great if it were illegal.  We are keeping less and less of our income as it is.

Not in the least...I always give a gift at closing with a nice card and handwritten note regardless of how smooth or bumpy the transaction was. I think it's important to note a milestone and an added benefit is that it helps people remember me.

I frequently receive gifts from clients at closing...once a beautiful bouquet of flowers, once a nice bottle of wine and frequently gift certificates to nice restaurants and they all mean a lot to me, no matter how small.

As far as other professionals giving gifts, that must vary by area. I receive gifts from the salesman who sold my car, my bankers, insurance agent, etc. and they all make me feel that my business is valued and appreciated.

My dentist gives me a gift everytime I visit!  Yay for the toothbrush, floss and toothpaste!

I'm not in the habit of doing closing gifts, but they are something that can be done without seeming unprofessional.  I just find that they should be geared towards the person instead of a generic "name on a spice bottle."

I make the transaction personal/professional leaving no void for caring & appreciation. The act testifies. However, one should do what the heart dictates...yes?

I don't think it's unprofessional but I agree -- it's rare that other professionals give a gift to their client.  I think it's a tradition that the public does expect us to continue.  I keep an ear out during the process and try to get something I know they'll enjoy.

I give a closing gift to every customer and sometimes more than one.

I have a very nice selection of wine with custom labels that feature my brand. I by cases at a time and hand them out not only at closings, but to also potential customers that stop in the office.

I don't think so.  It is a nice gesture.  I typically give a small gift that is very unique for that client. Other professions do give gifts.  I received several from people I work with at Christmas time.  My favorite home inspector gave me a gift wrapping kit.
