You're such a cynic, Richie! But then again, so am I... and I believe you are at least 50% right in this assessment. Then again, there are people out there who do nothing to stay updated on their own.... so this may be the only way to force it down their throats. The problem is that those of us who do keep up have to suffer along with them.

For Real Estate, because the BRE requires 45 credits every 4 years for us in CA.   We both are constantly education ourselves, we really enjoy learning new things, and discussing new ideas with friends and colleagues.  It is so much more rewarding than gossiping and bad mouthing this and that!  Wishing you a great weekend.  A

If all agents were like the responsible ones and kept up with industry ethics and trends, we wouldn't need continuing education.  Unfortunately the ones who really need the CE probably don't pay attention in class anyway.

The theory of continuing education is great.  However, methinks, the execution isn't creating effective results.

Because if we didn't they wouldn't be continuing...

The general theory I can figure from certifications that require it is 1) knowledge can get stale and outdated, 2) revenue in some cases (some CEs are free though), 3) to educate on new topics/developments in the field.

Although snarky(which I admire) methinks you have a point regarding the continuing education required for our license renewal in California.  

True professionals are continuing education on a daily basis whether are not we are receiving "credits".

Richie - I think you are onto something regarding the revenue thing. I think Nina might be right as well, stating that this forces some agents to stay updated.

I enjoy learning, but wish there were more options on what classes I can take to meet the CE requirement.

I think most agents would never take another class if not mandated.   I love learning new stuff and staying on top of the current issues. 

Things change and we must also. You do have some merit to the revenue driven element!

On a serious note, even medical professionals have to go through this I think.

To keep on top of new things and remind us we have to have ethics.

The key here is "have to" and some of us don't have to (grandfathered in)but we choose to stay up to date and relevant and educated.

I guess the obvious answer is because my state requires it. But I do love learning. I take a lot of classes every year to learn something new and refresh my brain on older things.

The state requirements make us attend those classes.

Updates, reminders, motivation, and of course great opportunities to network with colleagues at the classes.

After dealing with too many incompetent Realtors, some may need more education than others...

It's about money?  I thought it's because so few people learn lessons the first time, so they need to repeat things.  

Lol For same reason we want our doctors to keep on taking continuing education courses.

With Real Estate constantly revolving. I have completed more than the required continuing education hours, and here in Metro Atlanta, Ga there are many classes offered for free.

Sorry Richie, but I can do all of mine for free. Pay if you want and some of the pay enhances my business and that is what education is all about.

Some of it is not real effective but much of it is. I’m glad we have to sit through contract changes, new department of real estate rulings, legal issues, etc.

It's the law & you might become stupid. I agree with your revenue generation thought.

As there is always new information it seems it never makes it into a class room and most of the CE classes are a joke!

Personally here they should have designation courses available online and when you have them all taken you should become exempt in the future!

I;m sure there is a revenue incentive but probably some CYA from a state licensing point, so at least they are showing that they are forcing people to stay educated. That way when an agent messes up the Department of real estate can say they did their part in keeping the public safe.

Constant changes in laws and regulations. CFPB. Forms always being changed and updated. Licensing requirements.
