My experience is that it often depended on the recipient. You can get attention both ways. And it depends what it is you're mailing. On expireds I've done a mix of both.

Post cards for sold properties have definitely got me listings, but I use envelopes with (occasionally) hand written & labeled addresses monthly to my database. My e-report gets a 1-10 per month reply from my database too.
It's a "mutual fund' approach, I don't invest in any one "stock", I prefer the mixed approach monthly.

Depends on the look of your postcard, if it looks like everyone else's it will make a trip to the trash can. As far as a letter, if depends on your market place. A

I would say a postcard because it is easy to read on the way to the trash can. If you put something of value on it, it might make it to the refrigerator door.

Post cards with really relevant sales data that is something they would keep for future reference. How many seconds do we have for them to look at it and decide whether it is relevant to their lives or not? I have had listings that started with a postcard that was kept and a call to me months later. It works!

I like post cards because they can see the message and don't just throw out the envelope without being able to see your message

I would say postcards--they have a better chance of being read. If an individual sees that it is a marketing piece it may not even get opened. And the cost is much higher.

Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers given a choice, I'll go with 'Mail-in-Envelopes'.
People can read the postcard - I mean trash it without reading the postcards (irrespective of the size!)

Postcards are quicker to send and quicker for your audience to read.
And less expensive.
But personally, I seldom read any snail mail unless someone calls it to my attention.

Postcards have always edged out our letters by a fair amount. Mail campaigns require current & correct names and addresses so make it a habit to constantly monitor where and who receives your message.

They will prove equally successful. The art is making sure the 'What's in it for me?" headline resonates with what is on their mind.
Since less that 5% of the population of recipients are packing boxes, (you know the stats for your area) the challenge to zero in on THEIR issues, not the masses, is essential.
I use postcards for areas above 5% and letters in high equity low turnover communities.
