The challenge with building them yourself is the need to keep them updated. If it's a feed from elsewhere that automatically updates - different story...

I like making custom Google maps for my site. Yes, anyone can do map search, but many don't take the time or don't know how to.

David,
Like SO many things it comes down to the cost / benefit. It takes time to do such things, is there enough return for the time?

I have a map showing in the house location and a couple streets around it for location reference. I've seen some places (paperless agent and a someone else from CA's realtor assoc.) that touted this as a "lifestyle" map. Then again, they had a two hour listing appointment...
I don't think this is something that is needed. Like you say, people can google it themselves. When showing property near this, I point it out to buyers. For my listings, I put it in the write-up.

Yes, it is important IF it answers the question most often asked by the buyer.
That question in my slice of paradise is, "Where is and how far to the beaches?"
I have no interest in a map that might show where the closest CB, KW or BH brokers office is located. Be aware, if reason is present to leave your website, they may be gone FOREVER.

This information will be available on our new site when we get it up and running.

It is nice to have links to maps. However, I do not know if there is a need for custom maps. I would rather have a list of restaurants, etc.

Well I don't think it would hurt anything, as long as it was automatically updated.

I think it matters less now than before it was easy for people to access it on their own.
I like to emphasize local favorites for food, entertainment and shopping.

I think those are very good to have on your neighborhood blogs, but I would not link to them. I can't think of anything else...

It is not nearly as important now as it was a few years ago. Most everyone knows how to use Google Maps and Google Earth.

I don't think it would hurt. It would be one stop shopping (looking). It would give a great impression of you, showing you are thorough.

My maps within my web site does not have all the pertinent places around, and think it would be difficult to keep them updated, especially restaurants that come and go.
