ABSOLUTELY!

I hope to see Publisher's Clearing House, but usually see someone holding a little flier who expresses concern for my next life, or a tree trimmer looking for business (My property has no trees) a lawn dude wanting to waste my money.

During my time with them I listen, dust the effects of the world off them (usually the result of encountering curmudgeons) and encourage them to continue in a life of good discipline. I might direct them towards the residence of a curmudgeon in need of hearing good news.

"Go down to 123 Maple and say "Hi" to Thosus. Good news is needed there."

We have a gate between the sidewalk and the front door and a dog. Nobody knocks on our door , but no, we would not answer the door for strangers in today's world. We do know our neighbors,  UPS man, post man & water delivery drivers, so they get a pass.

Absolutely!  Finding some interesting answers here...I did late one night (after 10) and found a very disoriented woman who was experiencing hypothermia.  I brought her in, gave her a blanket and warm water and I contacted the police.  They had been looking for her most of the day and were glad to find her safe and sound.  You never know the reason why someone may be there knocking.  I certainly keep the storm locked so someone can't walk right in, but I use precautions.

I don't usually get unexpected visitors, since there is a no solicitation sign at the entrance to our community.  I look through my peep hole before answering.  It is usually a neighbor or a delivery person.  I don't want to miss that flower delivery!  Hint Hint.

Nope, never ever. When I was young, while opening Christmas presents with my family, we received a frantic call from a neighbor telling us if anyone knocked on the door not to open it as he had just been robbed in a home invasion type assault. I have never forgotten that. If I'm not expecting you, don't expect me to answer the door.

Doesn't happen often since we live in a gated community.  If it is a child, yes we open the door; if it is an adult, it depends upon time of day and how many people are at home.

I don't. But our security guy tells me I should tell them through the door that I'm busy on a conference call so if it's anyone who is casing the house to see if anyone is home knows there is someone at home.

I just moved in a gated community and no one knocks my door anymore:) Before I lived in sfr and I simply did not open to anyone. Los Angeles hood is not the safest place to open your home to strangers. That's why door knocking does not really work in here.

I try to always answer.  Sometimes it's a utility person that needs access to the poles behind my house.

Safety says to answer the door so if it is a bad guy they know someone is home and will likely move on.  I also answer the door with a heater on my hip locked, loaded and the safety off.  I don't open the door unless it seems legit.

I usually do. Sometimes I'll look out window to see if car is parked in driveway. Other times I can see they are carrying religous pamphlets, so I'll answer jsut to tell them I'm not interested. If they try to hand them to me, I just say no thanks. Occasionally, when I don't anwer, i later find bookles etc laying on porch or on garage floor. If it's an asphaly truck in driveway, i won't answer. We get those door to door asphalt salesman who always seem to be doing a job in the area.
