No downside that we found. Made the switch in 2009 - iMacs, MacBook Pros, all still functioning like "new" - and - you can run Windows if you need to on a Mac by using several different programs that permit this....

Good Tuesday morning John. There are no pitfalls switching over to a Mac. I do have a piece of crap for the inspection software. Other than that, everything I do is on a Mac.

I'm a mac and apple-all user for a last decade. I can not compare anymore. My laptop has all I need.

The only downside is the need to purchase new software to repladce the programs you commonly use, for example, Microsoft Office

John Mosier I would think the only downside would be having to learn another operating system.

Some applications are not available for the Mac vs the PC.

I didn't find any negatives. We went total Mac several years ago, yes it was a learning curve but we caught on quickly with no issues.

I switched to Apple several years ago, first starting with an iPhone, then when a laptop died, then switched it. I would NEVER go back to Windows platforms.
The reliability, the intuitiveness, and the attention to detail is amazing. Even now, after over a year having my current laptop, I am still so happy with it, like it was brand new.
Also, if you have an Apple store nearby, it is so easy, should you have issues, to get help. You just go online, schedule a Genius Bar appointment (you should do that when researching and/or buying too), and you just walk right in, passing up the line, and after minutes you have help as long as you need them.
The Apple store also offers training, will switch over all your data (very small fee), and will even do specific tasks with you, like working on a Keynote project, or iMovie.
Yes, as you can tell I am a HUGE fan!

Learning curve, expense and a whole new world of hackable software that is currently attracting some serious attacks. Not a lot of difference but I do agree about PC's bloatware.

The main one I know of is that the hardware and software are significantly more expensive.

I can't do it. I have an ipad and it's just different. No need to learn something new.

The learning curve is the hardest part but it really isn't that bad. There are so many good things to consider. The photo editing and imovie are awesome. The only other drawback is I like to use Publisher to create documents and flyers and other than running another drive to access Publisher on the Mac you wouldn't be able to do that.

If you've had it with people making decisions for you Apple may not be your choice. They have an even greater control over how your computer operating system looks and acts. Many people like this but those who like to customize are less enthusiastic.
Apple (and software) comes with a higher price tag.
Apple is no longer assured to be malware free.
The password requirements can be pesky.
No right clicks.
Although I use Mac, PC and Chromebook. I have owned and used all of them and tend to go to the PC or Chromebook first. I am probably in the minority though. Most tend to like their Mac better than their PC.

I have never had a downside and I used to say I'll never buy a Mac, after my first one I can't ever even use a pc anymore. With all the positives, you'll be 100% happy you made the switch.

Yes, the major pitfall is the amazing amount of money you will save not having to have technicians fix things all the time.
