A good question that could ruffle some feathers.  I can see both sides of the coin on this one, Bob.

Too much government control and I am a firm believer in a free market economy. If someone is unhappy with the wage they are earning, then work harder, and move on to a better occupation.

They will be replaced, someone that is in a starting job is not worth 15 dollars to a company. Not to mention if you look at history if min wage goes up within a year or two everything else goes up in cost by an equal amount so no one wins except the govenment collecting taxes.

Many of these jobs were never suppose to be living wage jobs but a stepping stone to sommething better.

I know the Walmart in our area gave the workers a raise and then cut their hours.   Mc Donalds did the same for some of theirs.  so, where did it help.

One other fast food chain cut their labor force

If they want to make more money invest their own money i the business and see how long they stay in business.

It will just escalate to higher costs and wages across the board resulting in nothing changing except for the numbers and higher unemployment when a machine takes their job.

As anyone can see, this only create MORE minimum wage workers.

The fiduciary duty of the board of directors in any corporation is the maximize the return to the investor. This means Wall Street will dictate what is paid on Main Street.

Are we going to see 'Apartide Like' movement against "Pay Less, Live Better" and ""Lovin It"?

Or is common sense again going to be replaced by the entitlement mindset.

When one can observe extremes (very high/low cost) you must look at who in the middle is exploiting the ones on the end. Example, High health care costs is directly related to the margins put in place by the Hospitals to negotiate with insurance companies.  The same applies in minimum wage environments where franchises dictate to holder the budget for wages. Not the wages, but the budget.

The higher the wages the higher the prices of the goods.  Businesses will of course pass the cost on to the consumer.

The more important a job is, the more we pay those doing it - with some exceptions such as sports and teachers. It's not reasonable for a person to work at McDonalds and expect to be able to support a family and a mortgage. This is the land of opportunity, not of free cash.

This obviously is a touchy subject. I feel a fair wage is important for many things including the economy. Our country is veering towards a service oriented economy since all manufacturing has just about left so that we with $$ can buy lots of cheap S#@T. I for one don't go to Walmart or McDonalds and have no interest in putting crap on or in my body because it is cheap. My first job which was in 1970 paid me in todays dollars $9.13 per hour. My apartment was $107.50 a month whic would be in the $300 range today, try and find that today.

Good morning Bob. This movement will not stop, it is good press and a way to attract votes. The only thing that should increase income is competition for jobs.

I think that if people want to make more money, they should improve their skill set.  It's ridiculous to protest and shout that you want more money with no basis for a raise.

There will be predictable "unintended consequences" and once again, the government will hit up the taxpayers to fund more giveaways.

Oh, how I long for the return of personal responsibility and for the entitlement mentality to go away.

I can understand why they want a higher wage.  But everyone wants a higher wage these days.  A job at a fast food restuarant is not meant to be a career.

Bob Crane I hope the prices don't go up here because of this.

Living standards are going up and so are expenses. So it will be fair for the class which is earning minimum wage - though still concerned what if they are replaced by bots and create another unemployment wave. affecting country's economy?

It's a catch 22 - and wish I was economist to know the answer to this simple and yet difficult question!

Touchy subject, but I support a higher minimum wage.  What I don't support is the movement to double it almost overnight.  I think the people in the $15 crowd are extremely out of touch with reality.

That being said, minimum wage has not even come CLOSE to keeping up with the actual cost of goods and things that people need - rents and home prices have skyrocketed, as have gas & food prices.  Even the teenagers working hard at minimum wage jobs can barely afford the gasoline costs needed to get to the job.  I realize gas prices are very low currently in most places (not so much here in CA!), but life has gotten MUCH more expensive.

We're also living in an economy with a completely different set of available jobs out there than we saw 10-20 years ago.  Those people flipping burgers and trying to support a family doing it that receive so much criticism would have formerly had the opportunity to work in a factory or some manufacturing sector with the ability for on the job training/advancement/etc.  We don't have those jobs anymore - they've been shipped overseas or automated.

I think $7.25/hr is ridiculous with how high taxes are --- those people making $7.25 are paying the same amount in taxes as someone making $1725/hour when they go out shopping, pay their phone bills, etc.......I've never in my life made minimum wage, but I imagine it would be very, very difficult to get by on, regardless of age, number of dependents, or anything else.
