It depends.  I do go over to their profile and their blogs first.  I try to, as a courtesy, make comments on their posts.  If they haven't written any or if they are all listings or market reports, I may or may not.

I take it as an incredible compliment when someone chooses to follow me.  I will look up their profile and if they are in a field of interest and their posts are interesting I'll follow them back.  I take Activerain seriously and not as a popularity contest so content rules.

No. Nor do I expect those I follow to reciprocate automatically when it comes to social media. I want to follow people that grab my attention with a blog or post, then upon further investigation I discover several blogs or posts they wrote, that speak to me. Some that follow me only post listings, local events and trite etc.'s; that's fine but it doesn't inspire me, nor educate me. I believe in genuine reciprocity, not by default online. So, I do not "expect from" just because I "give to" at that level. Referrals & business I would hope would become reciprocal naturally, but I have a different philosophy with social media & blogs.

I need to go through and follow more people that are following me. I just haven't had time to review all of their profiles, but I suspect I will follow most of them back. I think I can learn something from everyone on AR.

That is a great question. For me knowing if the 'someone' will be notified should a 'no-follow' be required in the future or culling would have bearing on whether I follow or not.

For certain clarity, I do nothing automatically.

I always reciprocate comments but do not follow. 

Even though that might be the polite thing to do, it's not what I do. It's not automatic. I have to want to follow them, I have to want to read what they write!

To tell you the truth, I lost control over that part. If I notice that someone follow me, I'm checking their blog, sending a thank you note, and if they post, I usually follow them back. But recently I get no notifications, so I might did not notice some followers...

Yes, it always ends up that way even if I don't do it right away. But I do go and weed out those who haven't written anything lately or those that end up not interesting me. However, I like to give them a chance at first.
