I think they are one of the things that AR did right this past year.

An opportunity to give affirmation without having to type up a whole comment.

It really doesn't make any difference to me.  When I 'really' like a blog or comment I give it a like.

I really like them.  I like giving them and receiving, and I think it creates a lot of positive reinforcement here. I think it helps encourage some of the new people here.

I do, however, feel that the notifications interupt a bit much.  I think it would be better if we had a little tally at top showing the total number of likes and fom there you could click on it to see which posts/who, etc rather than intermingled with the comments.

Hmmm, when you consider the alternative is many AR members will end up in the outer darkness with no acknowledgment they exist at all.

Yes, I do believe likes and up votes are to easy making them nearly meaningless but I do not intend to criticize those who mean well nor wish to discourage the practice.

Just like there are those who are 'radical' regarding door knocking and cold calling I can assume the same group may not like this innocent practice either.

Hi Debbie -- I like the "like" button and understand that some may think they are overused but I don't see any harm.

Whenever someone comments on one of my posts, I try to like that comment as a way of acknowledgement -- not always enough time to respond individually.

I miss the suggest button for posts and hope that it returns as a complement to the like button.

Hmm, I came to this question to see what all the ado was about from reading the post of Bob Crane .  I think I have read through all of the comments and I don't see anything that is negative as he entailed.  Everyone seems to be in favor of the "like", just not in favor of the notification situation.  On Facebook, I don't comment on posts that I know will get a lot of attention, as I don't want to get notified when anyone else comments on it as well.  I will simply like the post to acknowledge that I have seen it and agree with it, as I don't get notifications all day long.  It seems like ActiveRain notifications works in the same manner.  I am not sure what the solution is, but I like getting notified when someone comments on my blog or tags me in a comment, as I can login and respond or comment back sooner, rather than later.

not as much as they were when they were introduced.  They were VERY abused when you got points for liking something. Perhaps people who still do have not yet realized they aren't getting points any longer.

I think the "Like" buttons were added to give ActiveRain more of a social media feel.  However, it seems that Activerain only uses the "Likes" to decide which posts or answers are "most popular" for purposes of showing up on the home page.  Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and others use this type of information as part of their monetization strategies.

I have seen several comments indicating that members are tired of receiving notices of 'likes' as part of the My Home notifications.

I have encouraged others to 'like' blogs and comments and I think I will have to change my policy on 'liking' comments. Too much reporting can easily discourage practices that were intended to have a positive impact.

EXTREMELY overused.  I would prefer comments only.  They are the reason I no longer get e-mail notifications.  I couldn't stand the bing coming from my phone 20 times a day.

I can live with the Likes, though I do wonder where the logic is when the author likes his/her own post or comment, but the earth doesn't stop revolving on that one.

I don't think they're overused.  More importantly i think they're a sign of the social networking times we live in.  Furthermore, I don't think that they or social networking for that matter is a necessity in doing business.  If you do want to go that route, then "getting likes" is important in growing your network and it's something you should devote a considerable amount of time in doing.  My personal take on social networking is that it can be a great tool, but only if you are focused on it.  If it's not your thing, then you'd probably be better served focusing on something that you're more comfortable with.

If the notifications are filling up the email inbox they can be turned off but then you turn off all notifications. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a menu and could check the ones to come through to email and leave the others to show up on the AR page when we log on?
