Pet odor takes the prize with me and it is usually pet urine. Yuck. It makes me gag.

The kind that kinda lurks and remains unknown.
It seems like a lot of buyers "name" homes to make sure they can remember --- creepy, smelly house is not a good attribute.

Probably cat pee and cigarette or cigar smoke. I've heard people complain of "old people smell".

I have to say rotten chicken left out for a couple days during the summer.

Stale cigarette smoke and animal urine/feces. I once had a client name a house the "feces factory". Dirty cat litter boxes are the worst.

Like most here I think the two are animals and then smoke. Amazing how it seems food smells is not near as bad!

Ok... It is NOT the cats. Cats generally do not stink. However, it could be their litter boxes. That is horrific if not cleaned thoroughly and frequently. Second would be animal pee on carpets.
