I sometimes don't even try as they likely won't stop talking long enough to really listen. Very frustrating.

Paul,
I would find a way to distract them, and it is clear this person needed to just talk was not interested in an answer...probably lonely and has no one to talk to...LOL A

It can't be done Paul, this was a habit a former aquaintance had and while I try to be a good listener my threshold was finally met. I never looked back as the voice faded in the distance. Silence really can be Golden!

Paul S. Henderson Some people just like to hear themselves talk. This person didn't want an answer.

These folks can wear you out.
Most folks who ask a question already know the answer they want to hear. That is true here on AR also. No one is looking for an answer or to learn something new.
In a case like yours, I make a phone call and pivot away. Then send in the 'wing man' to clear the room.

Paul, sounds like you had a White House reporter visit your open house!

Good morning Paul. Love the question. I will interrupt by saying, "You just said something there", that normally gets them to stop so that I can speak.

I don't, I just let them ramble on.

Paul - I would wait until they stopped talking. If they never stop talking, then they probably were not that concerned about getting an answer to begin with. I really wouldn't sweat it.

Paul S. Henderson - there is a 'time-out' sign in sign language....(though it will sound inappropriate!)
Well, there are some people in the world who believes in creating questions - and let others worry about answers...

Very quickly bring your index finger up to your face, as if to say "AHA", give an expression that totally changes your look and then interrupt them politelty and let them know you have the answer to their question. Repeat their question and give the answer.

Very funny. Hopefully someone else would walk in the door and you could politely excuse yourself, or say "hold that thought".
