Attorneys in most states are granted to do real estate business. However, hiring agents and opening a real estate brokerage depends on the state.

Annette Lawrence has a great answer, btw.

There are many lawyers who are also real estate brokers. I went straight from law school to the real estate business.

Is there a difference? Yes there is.

Can a lawyer hire? State laws govern this. This is how Barbara Corcorran got started in NY. In many states the answer will be yes. What you fail to ask is regarding conpensation.

However, the ability to sell will be mostly limited to a sign in the front yard.

Your best action is to ask an attorney in the state in question.

Then have a chat with a real estate broker. Without knowing your intention the right choice for you can not be given.

You didn't share what state you are in. That would impact what the rules for the state are. You might consider checking out the rules in your state's department of real estate.
