Doyle Lee Austin Davison Iv - I guess I will have to change my response.

When Debbie Gartner thinks a practice would be tacky, I would follow her advice. She is the best!

Doyle Lee Austin Davison Iv,

I have mixed feelings on this topic.  I do believe it might be a bit tacky to request a follow from someone you don't know or someone who you have not communicated with.  However, if I am posting a lot of photography related blogs and am communicating with another member who has a common interest I would view the follow request entirely differently.

I can remember within the last year I received an invite to an ActiveRain photography group recommending that I might like to post photos to the group and I thought "Wow, that was a nice gesture".

Give people a reason to follow you bu your blogs and your comments.  Much better than asking for it.

I do not think that is a good idea. What is your reason for asking someone to follow you? Ideally, your content alone will compel an agent ot follow you.

Actually I would disagree with Roy Kelley on this.  I think it's tacky.

I really like Sam Miller response to this question. I think there's a time and a place to ask for someone to follow you, but to come right out and just ask, would be tacky as others are saying. I wouldn't like it if someone did that to me.

Absolutely. However, I would make the request after following them and commenting on their blogs.

It is up to you to write blogs that others will want to follow.

Here's a great quote from an article from Guy Kawalski and Peg Fitzpatrick:

"If you want more followers, earn them with the quality of your posts. If Groucho Marx were alive today, he’d amend his famous joke and say that people who ask you to follow them aren’t worth following. Maintain your dignity, don’t grovel for followers, and share good stuff in large quantities."  How to avoid looking clueless.

Sam Miller  said it best, I think.  Generally tacky but there are times when it seems acceptable.  Andrew Mooers gets extra credit for making me LOL.

I am new to Active Rain and greatly appreciate my Followers. I don't have too many followers and that's ok.  I would rather people follow me because they want to, not because I asked them, too.  I suppose someone could ask, and the worst thing they could do is not follow.  Quality is better than quantity.

Is it ok? Wouldn't bother me but I would check out what you had to say first to see if I was going to gain some great insight or learning. Now should you?  Some folks will look down on it and you might alienate them.

Debbie Gartner - says it best. Give others a reason to want to follow you. Work at it. Write informative blogs, post blogs that you have interest in and multitude of followers will happen naturally. It takes consistency and persistency, but it will come if your heart is at it.
