Get to Know L. Jean Murphy

I have a passion for two things:  Real Estate and Traveling.  So I'm involved in both!

I've been working in real estate for the past 12 years - first as an investor and, for the last eight years as a full time agent working, primarily, with investors (as well as still being one).   I have been able to help many first time investors "get their feet wet" and establish portfolios of several properties.

My favorite books that I recommend to beginning or intermediate investors are:  Getting Started In Real Estate Investing by Michael & Jean Thomsett, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Ordinary People, Extraordinary Wealth by Ric Edelman.   Another favorite book is Why We Want You To Be Rich by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki.  Whether you like or agree with "The Donald" it is worth the read for the perspective they each on money, wealth and the United States.

Since I have always loved to travel and with and eye to retiring in the next few years, I recently started my own online travel agency.  It's just like Expedia with a face and Orbitz with a heart!  Whether you are traveling across the state, around the world, need a rental car to impress clients, to send flowers to your special someone or buy tickets to the Mets game or to the hottest show on Broadway - I hope you will consider checking out my travel website at:  http://www.jeanstravelsite.com/

Certifications

The EMS designation that I have obtained stands for Equity Marketing Specialist.  In the training to receive this designation we are told that there are 101 ways to buy real estate and only one of them is cash.  Creativity is the focal point of my real estate business.  I prefer to be called a counselor, as that is my strongest suit.

As I mentioned before, I've always enjoyed working with new investors.  My specialty has been in the residential investment properties - mostly single family, duplex to four-plex properties.  Condos & townhomes are a great way for many to get started in the real estate business due to lower exterior upkeep and maintenance.   Single family homes offer the broadest appeal when it comes to renting or reselling.  And many people (my Grandmother for one) see the value of living in part of a property and rent out the rest.  Determining what your goals are and what your comfortable level is the first step in my helping you become successful in real estate investing.

I got my start in doing "flippers" - buying distressed properties, fixing them up and then re-selling them.  While this has been popularized on many shows, there are many factors that must be considered before undertaking on such a project.  It's an area I know quite well and have clients that I have been able to help make money with this strategy.  It all depends on you!  I don't own any cookie cutters!  I work with individuals.
