Some Things Never Change

My approach for delivering quality customer service goes back to my car-washing, errand-running, babysitting days starting at age thirteen.  For pocket-change, my brother and I scouted our neighborhood for dirty cars and propositioned owners to wash them.  There was always competition from other kids looking to do the same…or was there?  I showed my brother how the opposition only cleaned the outside of the car while our service would `clean the inside as well, and polish it as a bonus for a fraction more.  We killed the competition, and it led to running errands.  Familiar with the car-washing business, neighbors started asking me to also run grocery errands (on foot of course).  I knew if I could get back to them the requested items in less time than little Bobby across the street and return more change, I would be the errand runner of choice, which wasn’t that easy.  It involved researching local newspapers and studying store ads each week on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for who had what at the best possible price.  I then figured out the shortest, quickest routes from store-to-store and back to the client’s home with the goods.  Needless to say, I became the most requested errand-runner in the neighborhood.  I was so proud and thrilled that people trusted me and depended on my services...no way would I ever let them down.  Car-washing and errand-running also led to Babysitting.  Neighbors for whom I washed cars and ran errands were now trusting me to care for their kids.  Not only did I win over my favorite little clients, I also struck a cord with their parents’ by developing a cleaning routine for washing dishes, taking out the trash, mopping floors and cleaning bathrooms…once the kiddies escaped to dreamland.
