Get to Know Russ Prothero

I'm the husband of one wife for almost 37 years. We were blessed with four children. One son and three daughters. I found it to be a great advantage to my wife and I that are son was born first. At 6'3" he was able to intercept boys that had should we say ideas that didn't conform to ours. My three daughters are far to pretty for my own good. In our later years the addition of six grand children has made our cup of blessings to over flow. At the age of 17 I entered the United State Marine Corps and served in communcations or as they put it "a pole climber (telephone man)". Met my wife in the Service Man's YMCA in Honolulu. She was a GSO girl that danced with the service men. After my stent with the USMC I couldn't bare the thought of leaving her in Hawaii so had to make the biggest decision of my life. So at 19 and she was just turned 18 we were wed in Wisconsin. In our life my wife and I were married in Wisconsin lived in Hawaii for most of the 37 years of our marrage and now live in Branson Missouri smack dab in the middle of the Ozarks.

Knowing how to get to any destination is first determined by your present location. I've been in the real estate  just about my entire life in one form or another contractor, developer, investor, landlord, agent/broker. I've found one thing that always rings true. Tell them what they need to know not what they want to hear. This allows me to face myself in the mirror every morning. Real estate is a business of relationships. Knowing what relationship you have with your agent is critical in knowing what to expect. I tell it this way "you don't expect the same things form your sister as you do your wife". That's because you have a different relationship. Real estate is the same way, know who represent who & what obligations they have to their prospective client or customer. An agent can be representing one of three people in the transaction the buyer, the seller, or themselves. That is great information to know when you first enter into any transaction. With the advent of agency you as the buyer or seller have a number of choices in agency. Who and how do you wish to be represented. Different state address agency differently but it boils down to Transaction Brokerage, Subagent to the Seller (Agent of the Agent), Seller's or Landlords Limited Agent, Buyer's or Tenant's Limited Agent, Dual agent, Designated agent. When selecting an agent it all comes down to experence. As a young married couple we were sold a number of things that we didn't need. I remember a set of encyclopedias we bought for our future children and my wife wasn't pregnant yet or so I thought. The books were out dated before our children learned how to read. Who's interest was that salesman looking out for. Then there was the vacuum cleaner salesman we've all seen them with every gadget known to man "oh we didn't buy that'. But who was the salesman representing? A couple of months ago a young couple came to me to sell their home they had bought for an investment. They had listed the home with the same agent they had bought the home from and been on the market for about a year at this point. They asked me why it hadn't sold. The answer was they were over priced and were upside down on the home after they added all the improvements and cost of the selling. Who is representing me and how? This is the question you need to ask yourself every time you enter a transaction. When selecting an agent look for experience. Look for an agent that will serve you not sell you.
