Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta. It is located at the transition zone between the Canadian Rockies foothills and the Canadian Prairies. Calgary's elevation is approximately 1,048 m (3,438 ft) above sea level downtown, and 1,083 m (3,553 ft) at the airport. The city covers a land area of 726.5 km2 (280.5 sq mi) (as of 2006) and as such exceeds the land area of the City of Toronto.

Calgary's winters can be quite cold; but warm & dry Chinook winds routinely blow into the city from over the mountains during the winter months, giving Calgarians a break from the cold. These winds have been known to raise the winter temperature by up to 15 °C (27 °F) in just a few hours, and may last several days. The city is among the sunniest in Canada, with 2,400 hours of annual sunshine.

For now, Calgary is Western Canada's head office centre, but in time that designation may be expanded to cover the entire country. Over the last decade, the number of head offices in Calgary has grown by 46.2 per cent, the highest rate in the country. Many of these head offices are directly related to the oil & gas sector, which is the major driving factor for the Alberta economy. Montreal was the defining city of the 19th century, while Toronto was the focus in the 20th century. Well it looks like that this century very much belongs to Calgary.
