Nelson earned a degree in Administration of Justice; he has worked for the Department of Defense (U.S. Army) serving a tour in Southwest Asia (Liberation of Kuwait), while assigned to the 1/11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fulda, Germany. After serving with the U.S. Army, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard for 6 ½ years.
