Get to Know Joel Lahey

Joel grew up in Eastern Iowa, originally from the Dubuque area then moving to Cedar Rapids after graduating with degrees in Computer Science, Business, and English. Note for you grammar nazi's: he loves to read but HATES grammar, so forgive the fact he writes...uh..."loosely."

Instead of sitting behind a box writing code, he decided to take his nerd skills and use them to become a Realtor and Photographer. Nerd skills help with being analytical for his clients. English skills help with contracts and communication, and Business skills round out most everything else.

His first year he was recognized as newcomer of the year, got his GRI, ABR, and his CRS designation - and continues to do 100-300 hours of continuing education each year.

In addition to residential sales, he also specializes in probate and estate sales, pre-foreclosure, and investment opportunities.

Certifications

CRS, GRI, ABR, CPRES, and a bunch of other stuff.  Look, here's the point.  Each, ok fine, most but not all designation and certifications basically mean you've taken extra time to learn more about a specialty.

For example the ABR means you've learned a lot about helping buyers.  Well, if you're a first time buyer, you need someone who will take the time to teach you everything you want to know - BEFORE the "issues" come up.  We try to sit down with every client and gauge their comfort level, but with first time buyers we take extra time to take them through the entire process.  During our teaching session we cover everything from all the steps involved, who gets paid how, what are realistic expectations, inspections, contingencies, and timelines.  This is a one on one conversation, and at your pace.  We've had this take as little as 30 minutes, and as long as 4 hours (yes, he was an engineer *grin*).

Designations and certifications help with that.  If your agent has their CRS, that's the one I'd put a lot of weight behind.  It means they've done a lot of extra training AND proved that their damn good at what they do.  If *I'm* looking for an agent to send a friend to, *I* look for a CRS.  Nuff said.
