Everyone in Corporate America has the opportunity every day to commit fraud, to omit facts, or turn the other way. There are professionals today who may be unaware of, or do not care what they are doing. They may have been trained that way.  Maybe they think, "everybody does it."  But fraud is fraud and it will have devastating effects on you, your company and the victims.Your presentation was riveting.  You painted a very vivid picture that will stay with me & every attendee for a long time.  Your talk is of immense worth to our industry.  Thank you.John B. Norman – Executive Director/General Counsel, Utah Mortgage Lenders Association (more)

Everyone in Corporate America has the opportunity every day to commit fraud, to omit facts, or turn the other way. There are professionals today who may be unaware of, or do not care what they are doing. They may have been trained that way.  Some think, "everybody does it."

In 1989 I graduated from the para-legal program at UCLA law school and worked as a litigation paralegal in West Wood, California.  My first job in the mortgage business was with Countrywide Funding in Pasadena, CA.  In 1993, I relocated with my new family to my home state of Minnesota and took a job as a retail loan officer at Norwest Mortgage (now Wells Fargo).  In 1995 I obtained my real estate license.  In 1996 I founded Mayne Mortgage and Neighborhood Redevelopment Corp.  By 1998 I had 10 employees and was growing.

In December of 1998 I was indicted by Federal Prosecutors and charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering - crimes that took place four years earlier while at Norwest Mortgage.  In 1999 I received a 21 month prison sentence.  On November 4th, 1999, I reported to the Federal Prison in Yankton, South Dakota.  My career and my life were changed forever.

For two years I was federal inmate number 08657-041.  To my business partners, associates and employees I became the guy they couldn't be associated with anymore.  To my family and friends I became the son, brother or friend they THOUGHT they knew. To any potential employer, I was a felon – an ex-convict.  To my kids I will always be Dad.

Since my release from prison in 2001 I have donated hundreds of hours in addition to making a career out of illustrating, through my personal story of real estate fraud and prison, the imperativeness of ethical behavior in an industry that is being brought to it’s knees by it’s far-too-common, "business as usual” attitudes.
