When we sold our home in Ottawa I had never heard of home staging but I did have over 5 years experience in the advertising industry. I applied that knowledge to selling my home.

My husband was already living and working in Toronto when our home went on the market. With two young children, I knew I had to sell the house fast. I had five days before the first open house.

I went through our home from top to bottom, de-cluttering, de-personalizing, touching up and cleaning. The final step involved creating strategic focal points in the home, to allow potential buyers to create an attachment with the house.

When our Realtor came by for the open house, he entered and he stopped, looked around and asked who had I hired to "stage" the house. I had no idea what he meant!

Within the first hour of the open house the agent called, we had a firm offer and two more on the way. By the end of the day, the house was sold. It was two weeks before Christmas, a time when the real estate market virtually grinds to a halt. The Realtors who viewed our home that day, asked our agent, "What company had staged the home".

That's when the seed was planted. Since relocating to the Durham area, I have spent a considerable amount of time researching the home staging industry. I also spent time assisting friends and family to prepare their homes for sale.

Having previously owned and operated a successful advertising and marketing firm in Ottawa, I knew I had what it took to run a business and my background gives me a unique perspective to home staging. I approach every home as its own unique product to market and sell. That approach truly provides my customers with an advantage. I build on my strong base to provide my customers the best possible service. Recently, I participated in a program known as the "Staging Diva", offered by Debra Gould of Six Elements - an industry leader in Home Staging.

After servicing the Durham region for 2 years, we decided to relocated to the Halifax region. Once again staging proved its value. We had signed papers with an agent on a Thursday morning and by lunch time that day we already started getting viewings. By the end of the weekend we had a firm offer and we were on our way!

Before:This Master Bedroom needed some help. Original contractor paint coupled with framed children's drawings didn't give the room an "adult feel".   After:Fresh paint, de cluttering, and paintings borrowed from the sitting room add an air of warmth and romance to a once cold and untouched room. Before:The sitting room had no character and was a room to ignore when you entered the house.   After:Fresh paint, end tables, lights and new prints turned this room into an inviting area to sit and chat with guests. Before:The dining room furniture was fine, however there was over 7 pieces of dinner wear per setting and the room didn't have a comfortable feel for formal dining.   After:Removing much of the clutter from the table and removing some overpowering plant life, and a splash of colour brought this room to life. Before:This kitchen and eating space was white, white, and more white. Besides a hanging plant and a fruit bowl there was nothing to look at.   After:Some neutral paint, place settings and basic countertop items, helped breathe some need life into a boring room. Before:This living space, although uncluttered and clean, made focus of an empty wall. Furniture placement also made the space boxed and rigid looking.   After:A series of theme photos helps occupy the space and the simple clean arrangement of the existing furniture offers an inviting place to sit. Before:This rec room was the main entertainment room in the house. However, it was not an inviting room for its intended purpose for young children and adults.   After:Furniture was rearranged and a slightly warmer paint colour was applied. Inexpensive frames were hung and posters used for that movie theatre feel.
