Small Businesses Under Pressure to Lower Benefits
Of over 40 small businesses interviewed 77% have had to reduce their level of benefits to their employees. 69% have had to reduce their level of contribution. Companies who used to pay 100% of their employees' benefits are now paying 50%. And this on top of wage cuts in some cases.
In fact, the combined effect of a lagging economy and 20-30% year over year increases in benefits costs is such that 1 out of every 5 businesses surveyed has been forced to drop their benefits altogether. And looming just around the corner as the health care reform begins to come into effect, are minimum coverage requirements that all small businesses will have to abide by.
