I moved to Hawaii in 1986 after visiting Kona and having the epiphiny that this is where I want, no, need to live; a decision I've never regretted making.  Now, 23 years later I'm still loving it and learning more about it every day.

In past lives I worked as a hardware systems engineer for Tracor Systems based in Rockville, MD and working at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, MD.  This was my introduction to computers in the very early 70's and also what got me out of computers in the early 70's.

I lived in the San Francisco Bay area after that and worked in prisoner early release programs at the San Mateo County Jail and San Quentin Penetentiary and was a partner in a printing company in Palo Alto.  I was involved in the graphic arts and design and was a ghost artist for a popular local comic strip.

In 1976 I moved to Maine, brilliant.  After freezing off various body parts I headed west again stopping in Boulder, CO.  Here I built houses working as a carpenter and independent contractor.  Once the snow hit I was again reminded of Maine and headed farther west arriving in L.A.  There I ran into friends and decided to stay a while.  I worked as a landscaper for a time and got interested in long distance running.  I decided to go back to school at this point so I headed north to Eugene, OR where I enrolled at Lane Community College to study Construction Technology.  Graduating with an Associates Degreee and a burning desire to learn more, I transferred to the University of Oregon.  After almost 6 years there, I was asked to graduate so I could start paying graduate fees since I'd taken nearly every course offered under graduates.  I graduated in 1985 with a Geology major and a minor in Cognitive Psychology; I can tell you how rocks learn.

I stayed in Eugene and worked as a building contractor but also became interested in glass etching.  Before long, I was etching far more art glass than contracting work since the building market died in the late 70's.  In 1986 I took that fateful vacation to Kona, a place I couldn't even find on the map but I knew I liked the coffee.  Instead of vacationing, I spent the week talking to every glass artist I could find on the island because I knew this was where I had to be.

Upon moving to Kona I sold my glass studio equipment and went back to work as a builder for a while.  It didn't take long to get tired of working in the Hawaiian sun so I got certified in SCUBA diving, somthing I'd been doing since 1955, long before you had to be certified.  Before long I had risen to Instructor status and worked at Kona Coast Divers, Captain Nemo's and Jack's Diving Locker in Kona.  When I met my wife in 1990 I realized I had to get a real job and started a maintenance business designed to support the vacation rental industry in west Hawaii.

One day while sweating under a dirty smelly bathroom vanity I had a Realtor come in to show the condo.  I looked at him, nicely dressed, clean, yacking away with his clients then heading out to lunch, then compared that to me who was dirty, sweaty and didn't have time for lunch and decided he had the better job.  I then took the prelicensing course and began my real estate career in 1996 at Century 21 Big Island Real Estate.  I stayed at Century 21 until I earned my broker's license in 1998 having been a multimillion dollar producer those years then bought in as a partner at Prudential Big Island Realty.  While at Prudential, I became the Princple Broker and found out what it was like herding cats.

In 2000 I decided it was time to again work for myself.  I began Ferrari Pacific Realty and opened an office with two agents.  During the succeeding years I've had as many as 7 agents and now just one, I like it like that.  I've taken continuous eduaction courses always trying to learn something new.  I'm an Accredited Buyer's Representative, a Certified Residential Specialist and a Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager.  Between me and my agents, we've closed over $100 million in property transactions.  I have sold everything from $5,000 lots at the south end of our island to a $5.5 million dollar luxury home at 49 Black Sands Beach.  In between those two are homes, condos and land in every possible price range.  The more I learn about real estate, the more I enjoy it.  I have never stayed in one place so long nor had one type of work for so long but still love living in Hawaii and working as a real estate broker.

Certifications

Having lived on Hawaii Island for the past 23 years and worked in real estate for the last 14 years, there isn't much about West Hawaii I don't know about of don't have immediate information on.  I specilize in Kailua Kona, Keauhou, Holualoa, Waikoloa, Waikoloa Beach Resort and the Mauna Lani Beach Resort areas.  I work in all residential Single Family Residences and condos as well as vacant land.  I work with buyers looking for a first home, a second or vacation home and investors whether you're looking for a vacation rental property or 5,000 acres of land for an animal preserve of sustainable forest farming.

I keep a small number of listings since I pride myself on personalized service to those clients.  I try to be at every showing for my clients since I know more about the property than any buyer's agent will have learned and sometimes, it's those nuances that sell a particular home or condo.  I like to keep my clients up to date with their property, their neighborhood and the market in general and I can't personalize a huge number of active clients.

I write a weekly newsletter, Aloha Friday, that covers Hawaii in general but tends to focus on West Hawaii, North & South Kona and South Kohala in particular.  To be on the mailing list just click here.  I don't sell contact information nor share it unless you authorize that sharing.  To read my privacy policy, click here.
