I enjoy Santa Cruz the Monterey Bay area the Central Coast part of our beautiful California, it has everything anyone could ever want!!
I’m a native Californian, born in Santa Clara Valley. Raised on the farms and orchards with abundant fresh fruit. Enjoyed the warm climate. But as I grew up I expanded my travels to Santa Cruz area and have lived there since 1975.
Have attended schools in nearby Silicon Valley, from elementary thru San Jose City College, Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz and some University of California Santa Cruz extension classes and of course all my real estate training and awareness of ongoing state and local laws that effect sellers and buyers ability to close transactions smoothly without legal entanglement.
I bought my home in Santa Cruz and attended Real Estate classes and was hooked! And have been doing this ever since!

We have many attributes in our area including lots of “Microclimates” to choose from. Most everyone that lives here are outdoors type people and participate in all the good stuff like; Hiking on great trails, world class Mountain biking, Surfing, Jogging, Beaching, Photographing, Scuba Diving, the best vistas on earth. Santa Cruz was voted one of the top ten healthy cities by some major publication not long ago. One of our favorite walks is on West Cliff Drive.
One of the things we love is our great gourmet restaurants, most of them include views but otherwise are special in many ways I’ll list just a few, it’s hard not to show preference but here we are. The Shadow Brook because of its old world charm and uniqueness, the Crow’s Nest because of its harbor location, just about any restaurant on the Santa Cruz Warf is good. Close by you’ll find Casablanca, it has extreme gourmet cuisine. Nearby, mid county, find Café Cruz, Bangkok West for their Thai buffet lunch. South county; Palapas, Manuel’s and Cilantros for their wonderful Mexican cuisine. Sorry just way too many to list.
We have world class wineries too. Alphabetically listed of course Alfarro, Bonny Doon, Beauregard, David Bruce, Bargetto, Hallcrest, Storrs, Salamandre (Boutique sized), Santa Cruz MountainVinyards. All excellent vintners on par or surpass the best European or Nor Cal Vintners. Sorry just too many to list again. Let's Go Wine Tasting!!
Every year we have local special car events; the famous world class Concourse d’Elegance with its peripheral events in nearby Carmel, Woodies on the Warf, the Watsonville Air Show with classic custom Muscle cars from the 60’s including local car club enthusiasts.
Being close to Silicon Valley and the whole Bay area is real advantage too! Jobs are on the upswing once again… in our huge job pool; Apple, Google, Adobe Systems, Oracle, Face Book, eBay Seagate, Intel, IBM, AMD. Just to mention a few.
Not to mention our amazing nearby Medical institutes, Research facilities and local Hospitals Dominican, Palo Alto/Sutter Home and nearby Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto.
Need we speak of our higher learning institutes like the UC system? Nearby UCSC on the upper Westside. and our own shining Cabrillo Junior college in our mid county area. Don’t forget to mention San Jose State University a short commute over the as well.
More recently while involved with remodeling my late 50’s home I learned how to make my home more energy efficient and “Green” by upgrading everything including insulation, siding, windows, roofing, hi efficiency FAH zoned heating system and Sun Power solar panels a 7.4 KW system. Our utility bill averages below $50. per month including natural gas for heating and hot water. Latest addition is a General Electric Smart meter linked refrigerator.
This activity led me to get more involved and to obtain a National Association of Realtors “Green Designation”. That allows me to determine way to help clients to improve their homes for energy savings and identify components as well as appraise their upgrades features. People love their green homes in Santa Cruz County. We have an annual tour of such homes as well as licensed contractors that specialize in their construction.
I’m also involved in a small ten unit project in Silicon Valley which is to be a self-sustaining LEED certified projected to include standalone units and attached units. Currently in preliminary stages with entitlements, PD zoning, all required environmental reports.
I live with my life partner of 25+ years. Holly Merritt, “Seamstress Extraordinaire“ who happens to be one of the west coast’s best known clothing designers specializing in Leather garments of all sorts, it (she holds many awards), you bring an old garment she can duplicate or create from your design.. | Bert first helped us buy a home here in Santa Cruz in 1991, and the level of integrity and service he gave us then has continued consistently to this day. When we were first starting out, he showed us every home available at the time, which could have met our needs and price restraints--we were only in town on the weekends, and he graciously worked with us for 5 months to find just the right home. As we were about to make the choice between the final few, our circumstances changed--we agreed to have my Grandfather live with us. Major change--new search parameters, had to start all over, as our home would need to accommodate his needs and health challenges. Bert was very flexible, to say the least. Back to the drawing board, with Grandpa in tow (he was a retired Broker, and patriarch, so he got the front seat in Bert's car) for another 3 or 4 months! We finally found the perfect house--it had just barely come on the market. I don't think any other Realtor could have been as patient and committed to helping us all find just the right property, and making sure that every question was answered (believe me, there were more than usual with my Grandfather in the transaction!) and that everything went smoothly with our offer, counter-offer, counter-counter-offer (!) and escrow. We have recommended him and used him exclusively ever since. He has always had our best interests in mind, whether to buy (or not to buy) or sell (or not to sell), regardless of his own potential interest or gain. THAT is integrity!
