Barbie was first licensed in South Dakota in 1985, intending to use that license for personal investing. Instead she fell in love with the real estate business. She enjoyed it so much that she continued to study, earning a Broker’s license, a SD State Transitional Real Estate Appraiser license, and the Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) designation.
After a move to Minnesota in 1994 she worked for a Title company as a mortgage closer and real estate closer. At the close of the business she worked for a local Direct Mail-Internet company as a Customer Service Representative and worked her way up to Telemarketing Supervisor and then Operations Specialist, assisting with Quality Assurance in training new CS Representatives.
In 2005 her Realtor husband persuaded her to become licensed in Minnesota. From 2007 through 2011 she also worked as a Home Retention Consultant, gaining personal satisfaction from creating solutions that allowed many homeowners to keep their homes. For some, however, the only option was to sell before foreclosure, so she gained valuable experience with the pre-foreclosure process.
A perpetual student, Barbie now holds a Certificate in Disaster Relief, a Certificate in Emergency Communications, and a certificate in Tax Theory and Preparation. Her desire to expand her education, knowledge of real estate and technology is ongoing.
Each of life’s adventures has enriched her knowledge and skills related to real estate. Being an investor who rehabbed distressed properties gave her knowledge in estimating costs, determining the scope of work, knowing what is possible and what is not, choosing the right materials, and more. Her work as customer service representative polished her listening and communication skills, while tapping into her natural patience and empathy for others.
Civic minded as well as business-minded, Barbie was a “Room Mom” and a Campfire Girl leader when her children were in school, and she has never stopped volunteering. She’s worked with Habitat for Humanity, with the Women’s Benevolence Committee at her church, with Vacation Bible School, and with Operation Christmas Child.
She also served two terms on her neighborhood Townhome HOA board, and is a huge advocate for living in a Common Interest Community (CIC). She believes this type of home is perfect for first time buyers, empty nesters, and investors.
On the personal side, Barbie loves spending time with her children and grandchildren, baking and cake decorating, growing organic flowers and vegetables, going for daily hikes, golfing and curling up with a good book. She also loves travel, especially when it takes her to see family members. A pet lover, she and her family have shared their home with dogs, cats, and all manner of other small animals, most of whom have been rescues. Currently she has one cat, two grand-dogs, and one grand-cat.
