My blog is as much about a philosophy of life and living as it is about real estate as a business. E.F. Shumacher subtitled his book SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL "Economics as if People Mattered" In the real estate industry we realize that people matter and that where they live matters. We now also have a larger responsiblity, I believe, to get them to consider HOW they live. Everyone in the developed world using less energy and resources makes it possible for those who have access to neither to experience a better life and to make the difference between their being able to having a roof overhead or not or for their children to eat or not.

Was with some clients who are looking for a home atha will accomodate their need for a studio space and their love of the outdoors. Unlike most folks these days, they are not concerned about the size of the house; in fact, they prefer smaller to larger. They reminded me of Frank Lloyd Wright's p...

I do not know Cindy Ollerton but she is proof positive to me of what is possible with clear thinking, good networking and a talent for simple, strightforward action. As a result of the desire to do something positive and healing in the wake of the September 11 World Trade Center disaster she wo...

For those of you old enough to remember Werner Erhardt and EST this may come as a shock. While I never understood why people were so enamoured of him or EST I do think that he made at least one very profound statement. In the process of "Getting it" people were apt to complicate matters a lot. ...

I have mentioned in previous posts that I was a Social Worker and Counselor for many years before I began my career in real estate. As the new year approaches, I find myself reflecting on the ways in which  my current choice of occupation relates to my past experience. One way in which my marke...

Finding the perfect green elements in a home is akin to the search for the holy grail. There are many layers of considerations that must be mulled through. Nothing is necessarily the perfectmaterial for any given home. What is the percentage of post consumer recycled content? Is the embodied energ...

I am an unabashed fan of recycling everything possible, however there are sometimes when you need to let things go. Old toilets, for example are probablybest used as planters or bases for sculptue.Toilets made prior to 1994 often use 3.5 to 7 gallons of water per flush while new models use 1.6 g...

Been thinking about buyer loyalty--even seller loyalty for that matter. Saw a seller today who has been saying for 3 months now that she is going to list her house with me...it's actually her father's house and he has moved into assited care so I understand that part of her foot dragging is the ...

Back from New Orleans and catching up with all things that I couldn't do while I was gone. Learned some things, met some people and am instituting some changes in my business. I think everyone who was there is probably doing much the same. The city was not as bad as I had feared it would be,but ...
